Self-Employment – How Should I Present This on My CV?

Hi everyone! I’ve launched a few small businesses and ventures recently. What’s the best way to showcase them on my CV?

  1. Should I list myself as Owner/Operator with a detailed description of my responsibilities?
  2. Or should I use a title that aligns more closely with a role at a larger company, along with a description of my duties?

I handled a variety of tasks in these roles, but I’m wondering if it would be more effective to present them in a way that appeals to traditional employers. What do you all think? I really appreciate your input!

  1. It’s great to hear about your entrepreneurial experience! Here are some suggestions for presenting your work on your CV:

    1. Owner/Operator: This is a straightforward and honest way to represent your experience. Labeling yourself as the “Owner” or “Founder” conveys leadership and initiative, which are valuable traits to potential employers.

    2. Example:
      Owner/Operator, [Your Company Name]
      [Month, Year] – Present

    3. Oversaw all aspects of business operations, including marketing, finance, and customer relations.
    4. Developed and implemented strategic plans to drive business growth.
    5. Managed a team of [number] employees, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.

    6. Role + Description: If you choose to frame your experience around specific roles, make sure they align with the type of positions you are applying for. This can help potential employers easily see how your skills translate to their needs.

    7. Example:
Marketing Manager (in a startup context), [Your Company Name]
      [Month, Year] – Present

    8. Executed marketing strategies that increased customer engagement by [percentage].
    9. Analyzed market trends to identify new opportunities for growth.
    10. Managed social media platforms and created content to boost brand awareness.

    Tips:
    – Focus on tangible achievements and metrics where possible (e.g., increased sales by X%, improved efficiency by Y%).
    – Customize your CV for each position, aligning your entrepreneurial experience with the job requirements.
    – Consider adding a summary statement at the top of your CV that highlights your entrepreneurial spirit and the skills you’ve gained.

Ultimately, the approach you choose should reflect your personal style and the message you want to convey to potential employers. Best of luck with your job search!
